The act

Harp DJ Duo places Michelle Smith's 47 string concert grand harp alongside a DJ set, pairing an old instrument with soul, Afrobeat, hip hop and Latin production. Michelle trained in jazz in Boston and has worked with Perth DJs since 2010. Her harp arrangements include music by Jimi Hendrix and Mos Def, an approach that led to a feature on SBS World News. She has also performed with Ed Kuepper, Karnivool and hip hop artist Mathas, and appeared at the World Harp Congress. The contrast is the point: the harp adds real strings and improvisation to tracks built for a modern room, creating a sound that sits outside the usual acoustic duo format.
