Steve Crain plays guitar, writes and leads bands around Sydney, and the feel is relaxed rather than showy. He works solo with his own arrangements of jazz standards and pop tunes, sometimes using a looper pedal to build layered guitar parts live underneath himself. From there it scales up: a duo with double bass, a trio adding drums, a quartet with keys or a horn. He studied at the NSW Conservatorium in the early 90s and has spent 25 years playing jazz, blues, gospel, pop and Latin here and overseas. His trio also does instrumental pop and rock sets, jazz attitude on familiar material. Jazz in jeans, not suits. Regular collaborators include Peter Kohlhoff on bass, Andrew Massey on drums and Barney Wakeford on Hammond organ and piano.
