Two acoustic guitars, two voices, and a snare played with brushes. That's the whole rig, and The Quokkas get a surprisingly big sound out of it. Based in Lawson in the Blue Mountains, they build sets that wander further than most: Paul Kelly, Bruce Springsteen, Simon and Garfunkel, Tom Petty, The Angels, Ed Sheeran, World Party, and Irish tunes a few centuries older than any of it. The harmonies are the thing people mention. So is the variety, because they like springing a surprise mid-set. Volume scales from very quiet to genuinely full, which suits clubs, pubs, weddings and parties equally. Insured.

Good to know
What to expect
Three players, though it doesn't sound like three. Two acoustic guitars and two voices carry the songs, and the percussion is a single snare and cymbal worked with brushes rather than a full kit. That combination gives the trio a bigger sound than the gear list suggests, and it keeps everything acoustic in feel even when the volume comes up.
On the day
Quality sound and lighting gear travels with the band. The setup bends a long way in either direction, from something you can talk over comfortably to a genuinely full sound, so the useful thing is to tell them which end of that you're after when you get in touch.
