The Alice Bisschops Trio

The act

Alto saxophone, guitar and double bass, playing the Great American Songbook the way it was meant to sound. The Alice Bisschops Trio is led by career jazz saxophonist Alice Bisschops and specialises in Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole in a sleek instrumental format, which makes it good background music for venues, galleries and receptions. Favourites include Take Five, The Girl From Ipanema, Fly Me To The Moon, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Desafinado and On the Sunny Side of the Street, with Bossa Nova classics through the middle. Ask ahead and they'll rework a pop song into an instrumental too, which is how Valerie, Creep and Thinking Out Loud ended up in the book. For bigger rooms the trio expands with drums, vocals and piano, which shifts things towards bebop and swing for dancers. All equipment is provided. Insured, with valid checks and tested equipment.

Good to know

What to expect

Alto saxophone, guitar and double bass, and no vocals. The Alice Bisschops Trio play the Great American Songbook straight: Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, done as instrumentals so the music sits under the conversation instead of on top of it. Take Five, Fly Me To The Moon, The Girl From Ipanema, Desafinado, with Bossa Nova running through the middle. It suits galleries, venues and receptions. For a bigger room the trio grows, adding drums, vocals and piano, and the feel shifts towards bebop and swing, which is the version to book if you actually want people dancing.

On the day

Your venue is off the hook for the equipment front. In trio format they carry their own amplification, and when the group expands to a quartet or quintet they bring the PA, microphones and backline for it as well. So a room with no sound system of its own is fine either way, and there's no hire bill sitting behind the booking.

Performance options

The core is the trio: alto sax, guitar and double bass. From there it opens up. Add a drummer, a vocalist and a pianist and you've got a quintet that handles swing and bebop for a dance floor rather than background accompaniment. Weddings, private functions, corporate nights and ongoing venue work all get shaped differently. And if there's a pop song you want in the set, ask ahead. Valerie, Creep and Thinking Out Loud all got reworked as instrumentals that way.
