Terence Koo

The act

Instrumental piano, played with a light touch. Terence Koo works mostly around Newcastle and the Central Coast, with jazz standards at the centre and detours into 70s through 90s pop, some classical, and even a bit of Studio Ghibli. Chilled beats can sit underneath if you want the room to feel modern rather than formal. The set can be solo, or grow into a duo, trio or larger group through a network of musicians he plays with regularly. A common shape is solo piano while guests arrive, then a band joining later once the night finds its feet. All equipment comes with him, so power and a flat surface are enough. Insured for public liability. Happy to use a house piano too, ideally one tuned in recent months.

Good to know

What to expect

Piano, on its own, played quietly enough that people can still hear each other talk. Jazz standards sit at the centre of what Terence Koo plays, but the set wanders further than that: pop from the 70s through the 90s, a few classical pieces, and some Studio Ghibli themes for anyone who catches them. If you'd rather the room felt modern than formal, chilled beats can run underneath the playing. It's subtle music by design. Nothing in the set is asking for your guests' attention, which is exactly why it works while they're arriving, eating or talking.

On the day

Terence brings his own instrument and everything that goes with it, so the venue only has to supply a power point and a flat surface to set it all on. That's genuinely the whole list. If your venue has its own piano he's glad to play that instead, though it's worth checking when it was last tuned. A few months is fine. Years is a problem, and you'd rather find that out before the day than during the first song.

Performance options

Solo piano is the starting point, and from there it can grow. A shape that works well for a long evening: Terence plays alone while guests are arriving and settling, then other musicians join him later once the night has warmed up and people want something with more push behind it. Depending on what you're after, that means a duo, a trio, or a larger group drawn from the musicians he plays with regularly around Newcastle and the Central Coast. Tell him how the evening runs and he'll shape the line-up to match it.
