Slow Train Coming

The act

A five piece rock band with horns, out of Toowoomba, established last century and past three hundred live shows across southern Queensland. Two electric guitars, bass, drums and saxophone, with five male vocalists between the lead and backing parts. Nothing pre-recorded. What you hear is what is actually happening on stage. Covers from the last four decades, filtered through rock, pop, blues, jazz, soul and Memphis: Van Morrison, Wilson Pickett, Steve Miller, Ray Charles, Bob Seger, Paul Kelly. They specialise in weddings, corporate shows and large charity balls, and they play 21sts, 40ths, 50ths, pubs and clubs just as happily. A trio version covers the same set list with core instrumentation, and it can also scale up to six with added guitar, sax and trumpet. One standard power outlet is all they need. Public liability insurance held.

What to expect

Two guitars, bass, drums and a saxophone, with five singers between lead and backing parts. Nothing on a backing track. Everything you hear is being played in front of you, which is rarer than it should be. The list runs through four decades of rock, pop, blues, soul and Memphis: Van Morrison, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Bob Seger, Paul Kelly. Weddings, corporate nights and charity balls are their bread and butter, and they're just as at home at a 40th or in a club. If dancing isn't your thing, the instrumental playing is worth sitting still for.

On the day

Everything the band needs travels with them. On your side it's one standard 240 volt wall socket and that's the lot. Worth checking there's a working outlet near wherever you want them set up, because a five piece with horns takes up a fair bit of floor and you don't want the sound coming from the wrong corner of the room.

Performance options

The trio version is the core instrumentation working through the same set list, which is the leaner option if the room is small or the budget is tight. Five pieces is the standard band. And if you want the full party weight, it stretches to six with an extra guitar, saxophone and trumpet across the front. Tell them the size of the room and the kind of night you're after and they'll tell you which one fits.
