Rob Saunders

The act

Thirty years of folk festivals, markets and local bars have shaped Rob Saunders into a storyteller first. He plays acoustic folk, blues harp and Americana out of Surfers Paradise, paying his dues to the great singers and songwriters of the sixties, seventies and eighties. Neil Young runs deep through the set, with Heart of Gold, Harvest Moon, Like a Hurricane and Cortez the Killer, alongside Dylan, CCR, Cat Stevens, JJ Cale and Van Morrison. The show moves between foot-tapping folk rock and reflective ballads, with humour in the gaps. He can bring a battery or mains PA for smaller gigs up to about 200 people, and can scale up to a four piece with a drum kit provided. He's registered with Folk Alliance Australia and licensed to busk by Gold Coast Council.

Good to know

What to expect

Storytelling first, with acoustic guitar and harmonica carrying it. The songs lean into coastal Australia, open roads and ordinary life, and the show moves between foot-tapping folk rock and quieter reflective ballads with humour filling the gaps. Rob is trying to pull the crowd in rather than play at them, so the listening ends up being a shared thing. That's the part he cares about more than any individual song.

On the day

For smaller gigs of up to about 200 people he can supply a basic PA, either battery powered or mains. The four piece on a standard stage wants two DIs for the acoustic guitars and two vocal mics, with amps for bass and electric guitar already covered, and a drum kit can come along too. Six metres by three under cover is the preferred stage for a full band. Small outdoor gigs like markets can have a three metre marquee and battery PA brought in. Larger events need the PA and a sound engineer supplied at your end.

Performance options

For anything more than about 100 kilometres out, fuel and a place to stay may need factoring in. Worth flagging your location early if you're a fair way from the Gold Coast, so it can be sorted before anything is confirmed.
