Ricardo Steyer Choro

The act

Choro is the older cousin of samba and bossa nova, and it's what this Sydney ensemble has built a decade of playing around. Ricardo Steyer Choro Ensemble work through the repertoire's great composers: Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Chiquinha Gonzaga. The music is instrumental, intricate, and much livelier than most people expect from something described as traditional. Usually a trio or quartet, using seven-string guitar, mandolin, flute, clarinet, saxophone and pandeiro. Weddings, parties and events, and particularly good where you want live music that guests can talk over or lean in and listen to as they choose. Small and medium events are covered by their own equipment. Festivals and larger venues need three channels, a couple of DIs and some foldback.

Good to know

What to expect

Choro is instrumental Brazilian music, and it is livelier than the word traditional would suggest. Ricardo Steyer Choro Ensemble play it on the proper instruments, usually as a trio or quartet drawn from seven-string guitar, mandolin, flute, clarinet, saxophone and pandeiro. The result is sophisticated without being precious, and it holds a room without demanding silence from it. Guests can talk over the top or lean in and follow the playing, and both work.

On the day

For small and medium events they bring everything themselves. Larger venues and festivals need a bit more from the house: three mixer channels with phantom power on one of them, a mic lead for the pandeiro, a mic lead for the guitar which has its own DI, and a DI plus mic lead for the mandolin. Add two or three foldbacks for monitoring, access to a power point, and three chairs. Pass that list to your sound provider early.
