Rein Mali sings R&B with one foot in the early 2000s and the other in contemporary neo soul, mixing originals with covers. Think Al Green's Let's Stay Together, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, Daniel Caesar's Get You, Blackstreet's No Diggity and a fair bit of Bruno Mars. He's had national airplay on Triple J and CADA, and won WAM Song of the Year. The Sydney based act works as a solo, a duo, a trio or a full band, so the same songbook can sit quietly under a cocktail hour or turn into a soul session with a rhythm section behind it. Weddings and private parties are the regular ground. Give notice and the set gets shaped around the night. Setup is modest: a three by three metre space, a power point, and cover if the event is outdoors in daylight.

Good to know
What to expect
Silky vocals over grooves that lean gospel and neo soul, with a songbook sitting somewhere between the early 2000s and now. Triple J and CADA have both played him nationally, there's a WAM Song of the Year on the shelf, and a run of sold-out shows behind all of it. What that buys you on the night is someone who sets a mood early and holds it. A solo set stays laid back and lets people talk over it. Put a rhythm section behind him and it turns into a proper soul session. Weddings and private parties are where he's most at home.
On the day
One or two standard outlets near where he's playing, and a performance area of three metres by three. Outdoor daytime events need shade or shelter over the gear, no exceptions - instruments and amps don't survive full sun or a shower. Somewhere close to unload from also saves a lot of time at both ends of the night.
Performance options
From one player up to the full band, and the same songbook works in all four. Private events, parties and weddings are the usual ground.
