Ray Solo has spent years in live music around Toowoomba, and the skill he trades on is reading a crowd. He'll open with something people can eat and chat over, drift into light rock as the dancing starts, then push on into country and old-school rock if the room wants it. Early in the night that means And I Love You So, Killing Me Softly, Under the Boardwalk. Later it's Johnny B. Goode, Whole Lotta Shakin, Honky Tonk Women. Over 400 songs sit behind that, so the plan changes live rather than on paper. He works aged care residences, weddings, corporate functions, pubs, bars, markets and festivals. The set-up is compact, three metres square is plenty, and the sound is full without being loud. Covers, he'll tell you, not copies.

Ray arrives early enough to have his corner sorted well before anyone walks in, and he takes up very little of the room. The music tracks the night. Dining and conversation music first, lighter rock once people are ready to move, then country and older rock later if that's where the crowd is heading. Years of live work sit behind that. He watches the room and gives it what it's asking for rather than working through a set list he wrote at home.
Three metres square is ample. Ray's rig is compact and he'd rather have a small corner than a stage. The one thing he can't do without is a power point within reach of where he's playing.
