The act
Formed in 2000 by two Victorian College of the Arts music graduates, Orlando Combo has spent the years since becoming one of the busiest jazz outfits in Melbourne. The line-up scales: an acoustic trio for instrumental background playing, or a quintet with vocals when you want swing and soul on the dance floor. Residencies tell you plenty about a band. Theirs include the Australian Open, twelve years of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington, eight years at The Botanical in South Yarra, the RACV City Club and Angus & Bon in Prahran. The sound leans on Louis Armstrong swing, the Blue Note era of Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith, Sinatra and Nat King Cole standards, and bossa nova. Quotes cover amplifiers, lighting and a vocal PA you can borrow for speeches. Weddings are a specialty.

Good to know
What to expect
Live jazz, played by people who do it for a living. The band formed in 2000 when the members met studying music performance at the Victorian College of the Arts, and there are well over two thousand performances behind them since, five hundred of them weddings. What you hear depends on the size you book. The acoustic trio plays instrumental background jazz that sits under conversation. The quintet with vocals pushes into swing and soul and gets people up. The material runs through vintage swing, the Great American Songbook, Blue Note era cool, old school rhythm and blues, New Orleans brass and Motown floor fillers.
On the day
Quotes already include the gear the band needs: amplifiers, lighting and a vocal PA, and you're welcome to borrow that PA for speeches and announcements during the night. They also bring recorded music to fill the set breaks. Timings are worth understanding: a quote covers total playing time and adds an hour on top for arrival and setup. Sets run up to 45 minutes in each hour booked and can be moved around your formalities.
Performance options
The line-up is the decision. The compact acoustic trio suits a room where the music should sit behind the talking, at a dinner or a drinks hour. Step up to the quintet and you get vocals, swing and soul material, and a dance floor that fills. A sextet is available at the top end. Instrumental and vocal repertoire both sit within the band, and adding both a female and a male vocalist can be discussed if you want the two voices.
