Mr.

The act

Acoustic guitar and cello is an unusual pairing, and it's the whole point of Mr. Duo. Douglas and Arthur bring more than ten years each across weddings, the music industry and orchestral work, and they use classical texture to give familiar songs some weight. Seventies rock classics get a string arrangement. "Stairway to Heaven" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" sit in the same set as "Hallelujah", "A Thousand Years", "Over the Rainbow", "My Way" and "All of Me". They cover the formal end of a ceremony and the loose end of a reception equally well. Based in Perth, they bring their own speakers, microphones and stands, and they'll want an hour for sound check before doors.

Good to know

What to expect

Guitar and cello, which is not a pairing you hear often, and that's the appeal. Seventies rock gets rewritten with a string part underneath it, so a song you've known for forty years arrives with a different weight. Douglas and Arthur both come from classical and orchestral backgrounds, so the arrangements are properly written rather than improvised around. It moves easily between the formal moments and the relaxed ones, which is why it works for a ceremony and a reception in the same day.

On the day

They bring their own audio gear, speakers, microphones and stands included. A standard 240V power point is recommended. Outdoors, they'll need shade or a canopy over the playing spot, out of direct sun and rain. Allow an hour before the event starts for a sound check, and make sure there's easy access for unloading close to where they're playing so gear isn't carried halfway across a property.
