What you’ll notice first is the brass out front: four horns, Libby Hammer on vocals, and a four piece rhythm section built to keep things moving. Based in Perth, WA, Hammer Nine leans into rare grooves and raw rhythm and blues, with sixties soul at the centre plus touches of Motown, zydeco, rumba and backbeat shuffle. For a wedding, that reads less like quiet dinner music and more like the part of the night where you want people leaving their chairs. The set draws on songs associated with artists such as Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, so the feel is classic, soulful and nicely brassy.
