The act
DJ First has been at this since 1980. It's a Melbourne company running eight dedicated DJs across the entire metropolitan area, so distance to your venue is never the problem, and a spare system stands ready if equipment ever fails. The DJs are mature, well dressed and confident on a microphone, happy to make announcements and introductions. Music gets grouped into short runs of similar songs so the floor flows rather than lurching between styles, and the selection for a 21st is planned very differently from a wedding reception. Setup happens an hour early at no charge. The company holds public liability insurance and a current PPCA licence, and karaoke and a DJ with sax player sit among the extras.

What to expect
This is a team rather than a single person. Eight DJs work across Melbourne, all of them mature, well presented and comfortable on a microphone, so announcements and introductions are handled properly instead of mumbled. The attitude is helpful rather than precious. If you need something, you ask. Equipment is modern and there's a spare system standing by, which matters more than it sounds like it does at half past nine on a Saturday. Multiple package levels exist, and you add whatever extra equipment your room calls for.
On the day
Indoors, a standard double power point on a 240 volt, 10 amp circuit does the job. Outdoors or in a marquee it's a bit more involved: an extension lead needs to reach within ten metres of where the DJ sets up, and the setup area has to be under cover in case the weather turns. Worth checking with your venue early, because a marquee on a lawn often has power further away than you'd think.
Set List
Music makes or breaks the atmosphere, and this lot treat it that way. Songs get grouped in runs of four or five that share a genre, a beat or a style, so the floor flows instead of jolting between moods. A 21st gets planned very differently to a wedding reception. You can hand over a play list, name your must-plays, choose a genre off the format sheet that arrives after booking, or simply leave it to the DJ to read the room. You can also list the songs you never want to hear, which is often the more useful list. Bring a USB or CDs of your own and they'll go on.
Performance options
There are several entertainment packages to pick from, and the right one depends on your venue and how long you want the music running. Extras can be added on top of whichever you choose, so the setup matches the room rather than the other way around. Karaoke is available, and so is a DJ paired with a live sax player.
