Strings that don't stay seated. DeepBlue rove, they're choreographed, and they mix lush orchestral playing with circus stunts, gestural technology and projected visuals, including a stilt-walking cellist and a hula-hooping violinist. The setlist runs from Cinema Paradiso and Holst through to Nutbush City Limits, Paranoid Android and a Bowie medley of Space Oddity into Life on Mars. Since 2007 they've toured six stage shows, played World Expos in Shanghai and Osaka, and appeared on the ABC broadcast of the 2020 Australian of the Year Awards. Three sizes are available: a roving trio or quartet, a larger feature show with the stunts and visuals, or the full package with pre-show strings, feature set and a DJ afterwards. V-drums and wireless in-ears keep the footprint small. Their engineer needs 30 to 60 minutes to soundcheck.

What to expect
Nobody sits down. That's the first thing you notice. DeepBlue's players rove through the room, choreographed, moving between each other so the conversation between the instruments is something you can watch as well as hear. Add gestural technology, projected visuals, and circus stunts including a cellist on stilts and a violinist working a hula hoop. The music swings from contemporary classical soundscapes into stomping pop without a break in it. Kat Augastakis on violin and Greg Olley on keys both sing, and their vocal numbers are some of the strongest moments in the set.
On the day
Smaller than you'd guess for an ensemble this size. V-drums and wireless in-ear monitors keep the stage footprint down and make load-in and pack-down quick. Their sound engineer needs somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour to get the soundcheck done.
Set List
Mostly instrumental, and the jumps between pieces are half the fun. Cinema Paradiso and Holst share a set with Nutbush City Limits, Paint It Black and Friday On My Mind. Radiohead's Paranoid Android turns up, so does a Bowie medley that runs Space Oddity into Life on Mars, and Somebody That I Used to Know gets the vocal treatment. There's Muse in there with Butterflies and Hurricanes, The Who's Who Are You, Cat Stevens' Father and Son, Miserlou, Popcorn, Perpetuum Mobile and Madness with Our House. Original DeepBlue material sits alongside all of it.
Performance options
Three sizes, depending on how central you want them to be. Compact is a small group of strings, informal or roving or amplified, with costume options to fit the theme and the sound technician and wireless gear included if you go amplified. Impact is the feature performance, string and electronic musicians together with the stunts and tricks worked into an awards night or a party. Spectacular is the full troupe and a whole evening of it: roving performers beforehand, a quartet that turns into a rock band, the feature show, then a DJ to carry the night out.
