Craig Atkins

The act

Craig Atkins is not a top 40 jukebox, and says so plainly. His sets move through roots, blues and folk: chilled finger-picking, delta slide on resonator guitar, stomping foot percussion, with originals folded in among reinterpreted covers. Think Paul Kelly, Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, Joe Purdy. Acoustic guitars, didgeridoo and harmonica make up the kit, which scales from a cafe corner to a decent-sized event stage. He also runs didgeridoo demonstrations and learn-to-play workshops, and songwriting workshops built for team building and creative thinking, suited to corporate, school and community groups. The lyrics deal with life, love, loss and whatever he's been watching in the world. Three by three metres and 240 volt power gets him going. Public liability insurance and a South Australian working with children clearance are in place.

Good to know

What to expect

Craig Atkins says up front that he isn't a top 40 human jukebox, and he means it. Older covers get reinterpreted rather than reproduced, and because he writes his own material there'll be originals sitting in the set alongside them, chosen to suit the occasion. Roots, blues and folk is the ground he works: chilled finger-picking one moment, delta slide on the resonator with a stomping foot underneath the next. If you want the record played back to you note for note, he's the wrong booking. If you want someone doing something with the songs, he's the right one.

On the day

Three metres by three metres with 240 volt power is the ask, and undercover is better for anything outdoors. He can bring his own PA and mix himself if the venue hasn't got one. Allow 45 minutes to an hour before the start for load-in, setting up and sound check. A tech spec and stage plot can be supplied if your venue wants them in advance.

Performance options

Beyond the music there's a didgeridoo demonstration with questions from the floor, suited to corporate, school and community groups, and learn-to-play sessions on the same instrument. Songwriting workshops are also available, built around team building and creative thinking rather than performance.
