Brazilian rhythm sits underneath most of what Bim Bom Set play, with jazz layered over it, the Latin end of jazz especially, plus folk both traditional and indie. Bernadette Mether, Tonino Berghella, David Bell, Dale Finch and Poul Grage each bring different backgrounds to the group, and the improvisation is where those differences show. The book runs from Manha De Carnaval and Insensatez through Autumn Leaves, Summertime and Take 5 to One Note Samba and Mas Que Nada. House concerts suit them as well as weddings and parties do. They need a powered site, and cover overhead if the gig is outdoors. Based in Mornington.

Good to know
What to expect
Five musicians with different backgrounds, playing jazz standards next to more recent material and improvising over both. That is where the group is worth listening to closely, because the solos go somewhere different each time depending on who takes them. Ballads sit alongside swing, so the mood over an evening moves rather than staying flat. It suits a room where people are seated and paying some attention, though it works just as well as the sound behind a long dinner. The playing is polished and nobody is being formal about it.
On the day
The site needs power. That's the main thing, since the group plays amplified and there's more than one instrument to run. If the gig is outdoors, they'll want something over their heads, a marquee, a verandah or a pergola will do. Instruments and weather don't mix, and a shower halfway through a set is the one thing that stops the music rather than pausing it.
