Alpen Musikanten are a Melbourne trio of piano accordion, bass and guitar, singing in Slovenian, German, Italian, Croatian and English, and they play Alpine folk the Oberkrainer way: fast, happy polkas and waltzes with a swing pulse in the rhythm. The Avsenik brothers pioneered the style in Slovenia in the 1950s, and the band play it in traditional Slovenian costume. Well known songs from neighbouring countries get added along the way. This is music for the floor rather than the dinner table, so at a wedding its hour comes after the speeches. They pride themselves on authenticity and energy, in a style people in that part of Europe drive across borders every weekend to hear.

What to expect
Piano accordion, bass, guitar and four part singing, played fast. The trio work in the Oberkrainer style the Avsenik brothers pioneered in Slovenia in the 1950s, adding guitar and bass rhythm borrowed from gypsy jazz and swing to older Alpine folk. In practice that means happy polkas and waltzes at a pace that gets people up. Vocals come in German, Slovenian, Italian, Croatian and English, and familiar songs from neighbouring countries get folded in so a mixed crowd recognises something. Traditional costume is part of it. Oktoberfest is the obvious booking, though any multicultural festival or dance minded audience gets the same treatment. This is not dinner background music. It is loud, cheerful and aimed at the floor.
